NMDG                                                               NMDG Leading Beyond S-Parameter
Rohde and Schwarz (R&S) has partnered with NMDG to provide solutions for the Large-Signal Network Analysis (LSNA) market segment. NMDG specialises in development of products and services that ”characterise and analyse beyond  S-parameters" the behaviour of active high-frequency (HF) electrical components under realistic test conditions. The main focus is on the nonlinear behaviour of these components.

Rohde & Schwarz and NMDG have launched the ZVxPlus system, an extension kit running on top of selected R&S ZVA and ZVT Vector Network Analysers (referred as ZVx). The ZVxPlus system can characterise, in time and frequency domains, the harmonic behaviour of high frequency components.
Now true nonlinear characterisation becomes possible with vector network analysers from Rohde and Schwarz thanks to the ZVxPlus. The ZVxPlus adds phase measurement capability to the power measurement of the harmonics. As a result the incident, reflected waves or voltages and currents waveforms at input and output of a component under test can be reconstructed in time domain to give complete insight in the harmonic behaviour of that component interacting with the environment.

This partnership does not just bring solid products to the customer with the well-known quality and support from Rohde & Schwarz. It also brings the expertise of NMDG to the customer that links these new measurement capabilities into the design and test process of the customer. This is realised through customisation of the product and combining it with other instruments, like tuners.

BONN Elektronik                 BONN Elektronik GmbH

designs and produces broadband RF power amplifiers and RF  power amplifier systems. For 33 years performance, individual solutions and quality of our instruments inspire experts and users worldwide.

The covered frequencies start at 9 kHz and range up to 40 GHz. At the low end of the frequency range up to 20 kW of carrier wave (CW) output power are available. Up to 40 GHz still 120 W of broadband CW power are provided.

This wide range is realized in different technologies where most of the amplifiers are based on solid state technology. At low frequencies with corresponding very high power levels solid state amplifiers are supplemented by so-called distributed tube amplifiers. These distributed amplifiers are well known for high tolerance against poor VSWR of antennas available for low frequencies. Broadband power available in solid state technology declines rapidly above 1 GHz. Therefore, travelling wave tubes are used for higher output power levels. Up to 18 GHz output power levels of 1 kW CW and up to 30 kW pulsed are provided.

The core competence of  BONN Elektronik products is based on a modular platform concept. This allows to provide flexible customized power amplifier solutions perfectly addressing the customers’ requirements without involving any additional non recurring engineering cost (NRE).

Our power amplifier system solutions are perfectly suited for use in stationary and mobile applications. Mobile systems may start at a rather simple integration into a 19” rack. Much more challenging are highly complex special design-ins for all kinds of vehicles, ships or aircraft.

All these solutions feature a most compact and robust system design. Many times competitive system solutions require twice the volume of optimized systems from BONN Elektronik. An additional core competence is the capability of alternatively offering either air cooling or liquid cooling for almost all power amplifiers. The biggest advantage for the customer is visible at high output power levels or if integration space is strictly limited. Besides the significant reduction of the system size additional key advantages are reduced thermal radiation in the operating room, minimal noise and elimination of draft.

Possible applications for these highly flexible system configurations are almost unlimited. Addressable applications are ranging from small lab installations for testing RF components up to large systems for mobile communication, telemetry, medical and scientific analysis.

Additional typical applications are radiation systems for testing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and susceptibility (EMS) of cars and car components as well as aircraft components or complete aircrafts. Our special know-how also allows designing complex customized systems for simulating effects of radar systems or high power broadcast transmitters. Optionally all systems can be customized for military applications with full qualification.

BONN Elektronik amplifiers and amplifier systems are used worldwide in applications such as:

  • EMI / EMS
  • Automotive- and Aircraft Engineering
  • Communication and Telemetry
  • Test Laboratories for RF Components
  • Research and Development
  • Medical Treatment
  • Plasma Research
